131 /// Things I Thought About While Reading Sean Howe’s Excellent Book — Marvel Comics: the Untold Story

  • Did … did this book just make me feel a little sorry for Jim Shooter? I mean, the dude was obviously a megalomaniac and a control freak and the New Universe was a total stink-heap, but man, the dude oversaw the comics that made me a comics fan, so maybe he kind of knew what he was talking about even if his Big Bang idea was duuuuumb. And the way he got fired is kind of a humongous dick move.
  • I got more then a little teary when I read about Morrie Kuramoto and Danny Crespi dying.
  • I want to read a Steve Gerber biography.
  • And a Frank Miller biography.
  • I could also be very interested in an Eastman & Laird/TMNT book.
  • And one on the history of Image. Say what you want about the quality of those comics and the creators involved as human beings, but damn, it took balls for them to defect like they did. They literally changed the comics game.
  • I don’t need a Claremont biography cuz it would probably just read: “Wrote all the X-Men comics ever until he got screwed over and was probably into some kinky sex stuff. Also, those Elora Dannon/Willow books were wack. THE END.”
  • As much as I love Kirby, for him to assert that Stan Lee did nothing on those early Marvel books is patently ridiculous. And that radio conversation? Wow.
  • Mort Weisinger kind of fascinates me.
  • I think Marie Severin is the coolest.
  • Unsurprisingly, John Byrne comes across as a massive asshole.
  • It’s amazing that there is still a comics industry, you guys.
  • It’s amazing that good comics ever come out at all, you guys.
  • Stan Lee gives me such conflicted feelings, you guys.
